The suns out, the weather is warm, and it is time to plant! Things are growing wonderfully on the farm, and we expect to see a lot of growth over the next week with the temps topping out in the 80s and staying warm in the 50s at night. It's already time to prune our tomatoes and the Sugar Snap peas have hit the top of the 6' fence already! Shade will also be essential this week for our tender spring lettuce and cool loving crops. This week we have lettuce, spinach, kale, char

Growth
Warmer temps are forecast and spring is on its way! Tunnel #1 is looking great and the plants are putting on some nice growth. With hopefully more sun on the horizon, things are really going to take off. We've started prep on Tunnel #2 this week, which will be the future home of all our tomatoes, peppers, & eggplant! The first spring lettuce is not too far away! :) Everything is expanding quickly in the greenhouse too. Every day we are potting up plants and continuing to seed

Welcome Spring
It's officially spring! Even though the temps are still chilly, the longer days have the plants bursting with growth (and us bursting with energy!). Each day I look, I swear the seedlings have doubled in size. The tables are filling fast and getting greener every day! Beautiful Baby Choi. A picture of Tunnel #1 prepped and patiently waiting for plants. We direct seeded cold hardy crops like spinach & radishes 2 weeks ago and they are thriving! We are making good progress on T

Welcome March
March arrived and we really hit the ground running! We've seeded tens of thousands of seeds already including onions, herbs, flowers, strawberries, lettuce, and early brassicas. We will be seeding every week from now until about mid July! This allows us to have continual harvests throughout the entire season. Often, we replant certain crops at least 4 times a season. Some things, like lettuce, many many more than that! Seeding trays as fast as I can fill them! Our operation i

Having Snow Much Fun
We made the most of the winter storm last week and constructed a snow tubing course in our backyard! We had hours of fun building it, and many more hours enjoying it. :) Those of you picking up eggs last week might have overheard our squeals of joy! Wil snow tubing on his birthday in the backyard & me enjoying a hot cup of tea on my walk out to the greenhouse. This time of year we try to strike up a healthy balance of work to play before the labors of farming become all cons

Rest & Reset
Beautiful Lake Superior ice in Grand Marais Over the past two weeks, our family took the last couple trips away from home until next fall. For the next 8 + months, we will be tied very closely to the farm tending to all of our precious plants, vegetables, fruits, and flowers! We flew down to Florida to stay with family and enjoy some beautiful 70 degree beach/pool days! The sunshine and warmth really lifted our winter blues spirits. Then I went away over the weekend with some

Did the Groundhog See Its Shadow?
Yes, the groundhog did see its shadow! That means six more weeks of winter ahead. For us in Northern MN though, it's probably more like 6-12 weeks! Even though winter stretches on, the daylight extending and the suns rays strengthening brings us hope. Also seeing the vibrant green of our baby choi helps! A sign that growth and strength continues even during the coldest/darkest months of the year. Sharing news like this also brings us joy! A huge congratulations to our frien

Deep Freeze
We've officially hit the deep freeze portion of winter! Daily tasks become a little bit harder and my mood a little bit lower. It's easy to feel stuck this time of year, but I've been trying to get outside at least a little each day and, on a positive note, the sun is finally shining! I've also been burying my head in all the beautiful seed catalogs, which keeps me focused on the work ahead. Dreaming of what's to come helps me stay motivated and excited. Not much else to upda

Where's the Sun?
Anyone else feel like it's been a very rare occurrence to see the sun this winter?! Cold weather doesn't bother me much, but the lack of daylight and sunshine sure does! That's why yesterday's weather felt like such a gift. I took full advantage and went for a really nice walk in the woods. Trying to soak up every last ray. I also used the warm temps to move our greens into the house for a few weeks. It's time to reset our germination greenhouse and give it a nice deep clean

Winter is Upon Us
Snowflakes are already swirling this morning and we scrambled all day yesterday to make sure the farm was winter ready! We had our official last harvest of the season and picked some beautiful baby chard, radicchio, celery, leeks, & fennel. Even though the crops are out of the ground, we will continue to grow microgreens and experiment with some other hardy greens in containers through the winter months. After the veggies were picked, we moved on to clean up. Fences, ground f

November Update + Eggs!
I realize we've been pretty quiet online for the last month, but that's because life has been pulling our attention elsewhere. Fall farm work & harvest, winter prep, multiple trips, annual Bryndlewood Halloween party, and birthday celebrations to name a few! We were grateful for the mild fall and have been continuing to harvest some beautiful veggies. The late fall cauliflower has been delicious and we even managed to get another small crop of radishes and green onions. You
